Modern meals for modern offices
Chewse (acquired by Foodee) capitalized the inversely proportional relation between unhealthy fast-food lunches at US office’s desks and the variety and healthful meals local restaurants made. Capicua professionalized their development lifecycles and software maturity and prepared them for a successful acquisition just before COVID hit.
On-site design sprint. Menu builder. VUE frontend.
Build a managed platform for businesses to order meals.
Chewse (now acquired por Foodee) is a San Francisco-based startup that is making it easy for companies to provide great quality food for their employees. Through their service they connect companies with restaurants to organize catered meals with customizable menus
Its impact can be measured with the expansion through several major US cities, the level of connection that creates between the parts, and also by the fact that they work along with charity organizations to donate extra food that is left over from their meal services.
Chewse’s goal is to be the place where modern offices plan their meals. They’re experts in individual meals, smart packaging and, due to recent conjuncture, they have contactless delivery.
The company was born in 2011, when its founders discovered the asymmetric relation between fast-food lunches at US office’s desks, considering tasteless corporate catering meals, and the variety and delicious meals made by restaurants around those zones which had to close their doors due lack of customers.
Founders Jon Cartwright and Ryan Spong aimed to liberate company cultures from sad desk lunches and bad office catering once and for all. This dream became a reality in 2013, and by now, Chewse has delivered over 10,000,000 office catering meals in 10 cities across North America—and it’s continuing to grow.
Chewse had their own internal backend development team but no designer. They reached out to Capicua to extend their capabilities as well as ongoing contractor. We started by designing and developing the frontend of their internal app for menu building and stayed to work on several more projects. The challenges included an on-site design sprint, a menu builder and a VUE frontend.
“The challenge was to strengthen local restaurants by building a managed platform for businesses to order meals and create connections between them.”
The client wanted to build an additional app to help automate its delivery process and wanted their custom-built app to match its look and feel. Members of our UX design team met with the Chewse team in San Francisco to spend a week in an intensive design sprint.
Every time Chewse acquires a new restaurant provider they have to input all of their menu items into the system. Each item has characteristics that need to be tracked, like potential allergens, style of cuisine and type of meal. It was extremely important to make sure dietary requirements were tracked correctly to protect the safety of those with allergies. We had to place several validation points in the application to make sure that items were appropriate for the menus that were being built.
Once the menu app was developed, we needed to integrate its logic with the menu scheduling app, creating an improved customer interaction with the company. To make the menu building process even more efficient, we built a tool that allows Chewse to upload new menu items in a CSV format, giving employees more time for other tasks.
We worked with VUE.JS for the application of frontend framework, combined with DJANGO’s application of backend frameworks and using POSTGRESQL’s database. For the styling of the UI elements we used Vuetify, a library based on Material UI, which helped create a style and feel for the apps that would be consistent and recognizable. (Wireframe)
Chewse had been using third-party software to manage their operations, which meant many tasks required extra work to accomplish. They needed to develop custom tools that could automate many of their processes. They reached out to Capicua to extend their capabilities as well as ongoing contractors. We professionalized their development lifecycles and software maturity and prepared them for a successful acquisition just before COVID hit.
“They're incredible to work with. Their communication is very good, and they've come to meet with us a couple of times. They're heavily involved, and they make themselves a part of our team.”
